Moorhead River Corridor Study

As a result of the floods of 2009, 2010, and 2011, the City of Moorhead initiated a number of interrelated flood mitigation actions. One of the most visible actions is the proactive acquisition of flood-prone properties adjacent to the river. Through that effort, a large portion of private property along the Red River has been transferred to public ownership. Given the changing dynamic along the River Corridor a number of issues and concerns along the River Corridor need additional analysis and discussion. The City of Moorhead requested that a planning level study be included within Metro COG’s work program to study the issues, needs, and opportunities along the River Corridor.

The Moorhead River Corridor Study will ultimately establish a comprehensive strategy to address issues, needs and opportunities identified along the river corridor. At minimum, the study will specifically address the following:  1) options for new trails/recreational facilities; 2) open space/community opportunities; 3) maintenance; 4) leasing options/alternatives; and 5) funding/revenue options.
